Product Photography for Movemints

Creative Direction and Product Photography

Movemints

Our CEO, Dave, said of your photo with the flavor items flying out of the bags, that it's the coolest photo he's ever seen and definitely the best photo that's ever been taken for Movemints (I think that's a pretty direct quote). There have been A LOT of photoshoots over the years, so that's high praise.

Emily, Movemints Marketing Manager

The Creative Direction We Decided To Go With

After the brand discovery call with Emily, the marketing manager, I put together this project board to help us visual the creative direction. A few reasons this works with my clients is it ensures that we’re on the right track in regard to colors but also overall composition.

These images provide a visual idea since often it can be hard to get a picture when you’re not a photographer.

The Creative Direction

After our brand discovery call with Emily, Movemint’s marketing manager, I put together a project board to help visualize the creative direction.

This step ensures we’re aligned not just on color, but on overall composition, tone, and energy.

Visual references are especially helpful because it can be difficult to fully picture a concept when you’re not a photographer. The project board gives clients a clear sense of what the final imagery will feel like before we ever step on set.

Props for the photoshoot were sourced by me, and on the day of the shoot I stayed in close communication with the marketing manager to gather feedback and make real-time adjustments to styling and setup.

Once production wrapped, it was time for post-production aka retouching. Still life product photography requires advanced editing, because product images are often the main driver of perceived quality and sales.

The product has to look exceptional in order to do the talking for you.

Why Creative Product Photography Matters

Creative product photography shapes how customers perceive quality before they ever touch the product. Especially in industries dominated by clinical branding, intentional color, composition, and styling can immediately signal that a brand is modern, thoughtful, and designed with the consumer in mind.

What Most Brands Get Wrong

Too many brands play it safe, assuming that playful can’t also be premium. So they default to copying industry norms and in the process, make themselves completely forgettable.

One of the most effective ways to avoid this is to get clear on what you don’t like about your competitors’ branding. What feels boring? What feels overdone? What doesn’t reflect how you want people to experience your product?

Working backwards from those answers creates room for creative direction that actually differentiates you while still feeling intentional and elevated.

How This Imagery Is Used

One of the most important parts of planning a successful product shoot is understanding where and how the images will be used.

A photo designed for a website hero or paid ads often needs intentional negative space and strong composition to support copy and design overlays.

Social media imagery, on the other hand, is typically consumed quickly and has a much shorter shelf life especially on platforms like Instagram or Tik Tok.

When you work with a product photographer, having clarity around usage upfront ensures the final image library is versatile, strategic, and built to work across multiple platforms, not just look good in a vacuum.

This approach allowed Movemint’s imagery to feel modern and playful without sacrificing the sense of quality and trust required in an orthodontist-designed product.

If you’re not sure on how you want to use your images some photographers, like myself, will help you figure that out.
